Teeth Whitening Products Causing Sensitivity - 18 April 2012

Teeth Whitening Products Causing Sensitivity

There is an ever growing trend toward people using teeth whitening products to whiten or bleach their teeth.  This can give you a much more beautiful smile and help you look more attractive.  With the emphasis that is placed on looks in our society, it is important to people that they look and feel their best.  When you have a beautiful bright smile you feel more confident.  This confidence makes a big difference in the way you act and in the way others may be attracted to you as well.  As a result of these factors, teeth whitening can have a bigger impact on your life than you may realize.

When you use the teeth whitening products to whiten you teeth, you are in essence putting a bleaching product on your teeth.  This can also get onto your gums.  Bleaching agents can be quite powerful solutions and cause sensitivity in some people.  There are basically three factors that some dentists say affect whether or not you are sensitive to the whitening products or not.  These three factors are acidic reaction, bleach stability, and genetics.

When you use teeth whitening products to whiten your teeth, it may be something that can cause no sensitivity at all in you or it could cause minor sensitivity or major sensitivity.  Everyone has a different reaction to the bleaching.  For some reason, it seems that fair skinned people seem to be more sensitive to whitening products.  Individuals that have other dental work that may need to be taken care of also seem to develop more sensitivity than usual.  Some people may not be a good candidate for the bleaching because of genetic factors.

For a whitening product to actually bleach your teeth enough to change the color it has to be quite a strong agent.  For this reason you can understand why the making of these bleaching products can be an intense business.  It is a balancing process that takes lots and lots of testing to get it just right.  If the bleach is too strong, it can cause problems, but if it is too weak, it might not bleach the teeth very well.  If the bleach is too strong it also loses potency throughout the shipping and storage stages.  The manufacturers have to get it just right to have a shelf-stable product.  A lot of science goes into manufacturing these products.

The biggest factor in the sensitivity that some people get has to do with the overall action of the bleach on the teeth and gums.  If the enamel on the teeth is strong, the sensitivity will be less likely.
